10 METERS OF EXTENDED US COASTLINE

sculpture | 2007

I dug a hole on the Long Island beach shore in New York, symbolically "stealing" U.S. territory by sending the displaced sand back to myself in Europe. Some of the sandbags were also intended for US military bases inIraq, to be used for protection in the conflict, referencing the U.S.'s controversial involvement in the Iraq War.
This act of relocating sand critiques notions of territorial dominance and imperialism. By literally removing a piece of U.S. land and repurposing it for use in a war the U.S. played a key role in, the project offers a biting commentary on resource exploitation, occupation, and the absurdity of power struggles. It transforms a simple act of displacement into a metaphor for global conflicts and the redistribution of material and moral consequences
