Nikolaj Recke's video work Mirage explores themes of absence and reflection through a surreal journey in the desert. The artist appears in strange repetitions, wandering through the desolate landscape with a mirror strapped to his back. This mirror reflects the stark, barren beauty of the surroundings, creating a striking visual interplay between the artist and the environment.
The repetition of Recke's movements evokes a sense of futility and longing, mirroring the idea of water that once filled these arid lands but has now vanished. This element of disappearance serves as a powerful metaphor for the transient nature of existence and the memories tied to these landscapes. A walk on Rosamond Dry Lake ended with being detained by the U.S. military. The officers deleted alle image -and video materials, except for this one, which I texted home to say, "I've arrived." I later discovered that this lake serves as a testing ground for NASA.
